how do you spell liberation and resistance?

resistance and liberation are boundless spells:

imagine freedom, unimagine everything else.

 

hide in the cave fugitive, traitor, collaborator. collaboration can be defined as the traitorous cooperation with the enemy. traitor to what? who is the enemy? what betrayal? if my body betrays my words; how can it be archived? counter archives, form a community of traitors to collectively betray systems of oppression. What languages do counter archives speak?

a body dreams of liberation is a collaborative and traitorous attempt to imagine liberation by weaving together sounds from both sides of the river with narratives of movement asking what the body holds. movement always creates vibration, noise or sound, movement and sound resonate in the body. what does it mean that sound travels while bodies cannot? what sort of bridges can we build on these soundwaves? is the bridge a border or a connection? on what ground do we stand? what routes can we take? if we did not cross the border, did the border cross us?

a body dreams of liberation is set in a cave covered by an ottoman era building, that in turn is built from stones taken from adjacent byzantine and roman ruins. these stones carry with them stories that may contradict the current structure they uphold. not only our bodies hold contradictory conscious and unconscious memories, so do the buildings and structures we inhabit. the cave can be an archive, an underground chamber of stories, a repository for resistance and liberation. but to cave in also means to cease existing. taking into consideration the sonic and historical layers echoing and permeating, bodies, stones, and buildings, across space and time, taking this unsettling seriously, what does liberation sound like?

Hanna al-Taher & I began a critical project on archives, liberation, and the body. we collaborated, like collaborators do. behind the scenes, in questions, in tangents, blueprints, roots, and unconscious silence. together, we escape a rumble of sounds and focus on the flow of water recorded in the Golan Heights and Wadi il Sheta, footsteps in il Quds, and more. as you step in this cave, you, a fugitive, begin to collaborate towards liberation. how will your archive dictate your actions? what bridges can sound waves build?
